Our Senior Basketball team CB Hispania has finished the season with its head held high.
A first round that served as a learning experience. A team not used to competing, at least collectively. It had to adapt to much younger teams, with better physique and a new way of playing. They had to use their experience, courage and effort to at least show their faces and compete in many games. It is true that there were many defeats, but in each one of them something was learned and a little more progress was made.
It was a struggle with our own frustration. Many of our team are not used to losing so much, to at times losing control of the game, to thinking that there is no solution... others frustrated perhaps for not playing as much as they would like and others for not getting out and showing what they know they are worth.
This is life itself... who hasn't gone through phases in their life when they don't go forward, when they have to go forward and fight. Who hasn't experienced moments of frustration in their life thinking that they don't deserve it and that they know they can improve. The body often asks you to give up, to give in, to move on to something else.
Often the winner is not the one who wins. The winner, or at least the feeling of a winner, is the one who, in spite of everything, pushes forward, struggles to improve and overcomes frustration with effort and courage. The winner is the one who gives everything and even if the result is adverse, thinks about improving for the next one.
In the second round we started by beating those who eventually won the championship. Not bad at all. A shot of adrenaline for a change and finally some encouragement. This was followed by some very good games, some not so good games, some more wins and many near misses. The team regained its smile and there was joy at last. The championship ended abruptly, without being able to say goodbye on the pitch, but we were only two wins away from advancing to the next round. Victories that maybe we could have achieved.
We'll be back next year, with a lot to learn and little to lose. We've gone from being the ‘eggshell’ of the first round to end up being a team that, hey, you have to work the game if you want to beat them.
It is still life itself... The result of effort and struggle. This is always rewarded.
